It has been real crazy here at the rescue. It seems the economy has been hitting everyone lately and surrenders are coming in every other day. Thankfully adoptions have increased slightly so numbers are staying manageable. We have had some good luck with introductions of new fuzzies into existing play groups. Our "Forever Fuzzies" has grown a bit with a couple of old timers with some minor health issues. We still have two once severe biters looking for experienced homes but with the help of our friend Janice, they have become much more gentle and at least they give us a warning before the chompCX6']]]]';
7p. Sorry, that was Leelou crawling on the desk to say hello to everyone. I guess the toughest hurdle lately has been the higher than normal surrender of single ferrets. Every one that has come in has gone through a real tough bout of separation anxiety. It's heart breaking to see how sad they get even when it means leaving a home where they were neglected. The old standby of Amoxy and Flagil gets them through it with a big increase in one on one time with me or Evelyn. We are working on getting the DES implants from Australia finally and look forward to seeing them in action. We still average a few adrenal surgeries a month and chose surgery whenever we feel the fuzzy can handle it. Has anyone here put their fuzzy on a DES implant? After speaking with Rose in Australia, she says that the length of effectiveness is still varying greatly, from 6 to 22 months. I hope everyone is doing well and hope to see some of you at the spring and summer shows. Keith

Clive, Cltomp and Will are the only ones I know on the board that has had it done. We were going to but Dr. Doolen - who was looking into it for us - left the Oakhurst Vet Hosp.

I have been using Des since about June or July? Our 18 months are coming up shortly. All of our excessive shedding has stopped and our coat is goregous, and we have no had any prostate problems. Our weight is good (we have had no IBD problems lately either but we have decreased the stress) We still occasionally have some agression issues and humping.... (well more then occasionally) but the vet thinks its more linked to boredom and being a jerk then Adrenal since it only happens when he is put in the same play situation day after day and only AFTER he has played over and over again (so it happens while he is still out to play in the play pen but tired) I traveled to Pittsburgh to get mine, but I guess our vet might be able to get some shortly, and well we are considering it for my little girl, she seems to have a thinner and thinner coat every year, with rats tail in the summer, and yellowing in the winter.

We have had mixed results...
Buttons has just had her second implant after 18 months. The first implant was "magic", and she become her fluffy podgy self again. The second one has only been in for about 3 week. The problem is, she has just lost her brother, and we have introduced her to 2 new cage mates, along with slimming down for the summer, so it is hard to know how well the second implant is doing yet.
Smartie died after 2 weeks from the flair. Munchie, had many things wrong with him, along with suspected Adrenal, so had the implant, but died after having it in for 4 months.
We have also used it on 3 as Chemical Castration to delay surgical castration.

Where is Dr. Doolan? Is he in New Jersey? My friend just told me tonight on the phone about a Dr Doolan at Northstar Vet. Hospital in Clarksburg New Jersey that is absolutely wonderful. She saw him before at his old practice where he did a VERY complicated adrenal surgery for her on a fuzzy with heart problems. The ferret did wonderful. I was going to contact him tomorrow about the implants. Clive, is the DES used for both males and females to bring them out of season (heat)? Thanks to everyone for the input. Keith

Yes, Dr Doolen is in NJ - he was with Oakhurst Vet Hosp for around 15 years so I was totally shocked when he left. And he did go to NorthStar VETS, 609-259-8300. He was wonderful - his expertise is birds and ferrets. He told me he would love to experiment with the Des implants but I needed to do the leg work. When I went back to Oakhurst he was gone. Clarksburg is too far to drive in an emergency so we're staying with Oakhurst www.northstarvets.com/staff.php

Clive, is the DES used for both males and females to bring them out of season (heat)? Thanks to everyone for the input. Keith Yes, the one implant, is used on both Hobs and Jills. Apparently it is also used to chemically neuter dogs, so while not licensed for ferrets over here, most vets carry it in stock. It's like a wonder drug for ferrets, as it is used to bring/keep ferrets out of season. Some people are also using it as a preventative to Adrenal in ferrets that were neutered early, but showing no signs, and it is obviously used to treat the symptoms on ferrets with Adrenal. Magic

We just received a young male with birth records and a young female with birth record, around Christmas. We have a Dr Kim willing to donate 2 implants to them to see how they work in prevention. As soon as my present stock of Lupron shots are close to exhausted we are going to switch some of the fuzzies over. Thanks for all the input. Keith
