I just found the Giving Tree and read many stories, and visited some of the shelter sites. To see their faces and read their stories made it personal and a reality. My God, I had no idea... For once I am actually speechless...

did you hear about the ones from Ohio? 700 or so of them now looking for homes and people to love them after being mistreated and mishandled for so many years... it is crazy the number of poor little ferts out there that need homes.. make you think twice about going to the local pet shop and buying one, doesnt it?

But the ones in pet stores need good homes, too. That's probably where most of the rescues came from.

I am going to try my best to get shelter ferrets from now on, I believe. Doublelibra has a point, though. I had seen our Blizzard in Petsmart for a fair amount of time before she actually came home with us. I wish I could take all of them home with me. Unfortunately, I am limited to two pets per lease terms. When I get a new house though... Once I pay off Gadget's vet bills I am going to pick a couple fuzzies from the tree to send some goodies.

I dont know if its the same in every state, but here in NY we get marshall ferrets and if the ferret doesnt get adopted out in a certain amount of time the ferret is sent back to the breeder to be "delt with" as theyre no longer able to be used to breed, and obviously theres SOMTHING wrong with them as they didnt adopt out.. there will always be adorable kits at the pet stores, but you might find that one of a kind ferret at a shelter

I used to see them all the time at the pet stores and feed stores around here but lately I haven't seen any when I go in to get new goodies and food for Kelley's ferts. But I am seeing an increase in people rehoming them on CL. People just don't think when they adopt that these guys are very social and need lots of attention, but it pays off in the way they give kisses and look at you especially when they get a treat.

I currently have 8 foster ferrets in my home, but wouldn't have it any other way. At least this way I know they will find amazing homes, where they will be spoiled by an educated and dedicated owner. I can't change the world but I can change the world for that one animal.

It's really sad how many ferrets are in shelters. Our "local" rescue actually had to expand. They have a shelter home in Balch Springs, Fort Worth, and now one in Tulsa, OK I believe is where it is.
The Ohio ferrets is a diffrent sorta story. Really very sad how they were living. Rufus is from that rescue. As is John's Inara and Sloan.

Stores here keep ordering more and then I see the same ones sitting for months and months every time. Ferret petstore sale shave slowed down a lot here but the stores still ant to keep ferrets "in stock" constantly. That said, at least they are ordering far fewer than they used to - the store closest to me used to be able to sell 10 or so within a week or twos time. Now they order three and are lucky if they can sell them in 2 months.

It's heart breaking that there are so many ferrets and other animals in need of homes. The really scary thing is that each year it seems to get worse.

I have to agree with mlove about each year getting worse. When I first met the director of Oxford 6 years ago the numbers of fuzzies there was in the 30's, and now that number has more than doubled. It is very sad, and I believe that is the case for most of the shelters out there.

When I got Kahloo about a year ago from Broward Rescue she had about 30, right now she has over 70 in the shelter.
