We are in the process of staring up a very small scale rescue in Southwestern New Hampshire. I found when getting into ferrets that there was almost nowhere in my area to find a rescued ferret, other than going on Craigslist...then on Craigslist, I was introduced to the "wonderful" world of abused and neglected ferrets. Because I spent two years as a vet tech with a GREAT exotics vet in Rhode Island, I have some valuable knowledge about ferret husbandry, and hope I can help. We have three resident ferrets, one who was adopted because his family didn't want to deal with his illness , and currently no adoptables, though we are evaluating two this weekend. I have a special place in my heart for the elderly and infirm and plan to offer hospice to unwanted ferrets nearing their end. If you know anyone in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts or eastern New York who either has ferret problems or is looking for a ferret, please direct them to me at shadypinesferretsanctuary@gmail.com (our webpage will be up shortly at www.shadypinesferretsanctuary.info - but my computer guy has been very busy). Adopters will have a home visit and veterinary reference checked, and must agree to a contract. We have changed our policies to include an adoption fee, to be the same as other area rescues and not undercut them - plus, keeping a bunch of ferrets, especially sick ones, is expensive! Donations of good quality kibble, bedding, toys, cages etc are always appreciated, but we do not have tax exempt status, so we can't give a write-off. We prefer not to take cash for this reason, and because supplies go directly to the ferrets.

An update: I'm working on getting non-profit status and becoming a licensed shelter in NH. Soliciting money when I have no profit or tax write-off to offer is difficult to say the least! I got help with my website, so it looks a bit more professional (It was crap when I was building it myself!) www.shadypinesferretsanctuary.info

Thanks for your kind words! I mostly have the art on the page because we need donations, but I hate asking people for something for nothing. I really wish the government was a little more understanding with their non-profit system - pulling $300 out of thin air for a 501(c)3 application is a trick when you're already supporting a bunch of needy fuzzies! I plan to try to have ferret sculptures/figurines eventually, but that all hinges on me actually having a smidge of talent in doing so, and finding a second to actually work on it...so maybe, maybe not If only there was a way to market ferret poop. We've got that in spades! ALSO: I started a ferret wiki attached to my site. If anyone at all wants to help, you are encouraged to make an account and help me educate the world about everything ferret. My hope is that if we reach enough people and teach them either how to care for ferrets or why ferrets are not for them, rescue won't be needed anymore. Best of luck! Just a little brat - I sold my first painting, one of the "paw paintings" done by the ferrets. They're inexpensive, so one of my friends from online decided to try to help me.
The ferrets do take commissions, if anyone's interested in an 11" x 14" mess of pawprints and tail draggings :)h

When we bought Jaret we bought him for life. I wouldn't think of giving him up just because he got sick. People like that should be banned from having pets. Would they give up a kid if he/she was sick?
