Hey everyone, I found an article that i thought everyone on here might be interested in. I have personally adopted a ferret from them and i know Leah has also. I cant believe some people. I have already contacted the detective since i still have sniffles paperwork and now i am worried that she hasnt had her shots that it says she got. Would it harm her if she got another set? www.nj.com/south/index.ssf/2009/01/vineland_veterinarian_not_a_wo.htmlThey say he was running out of vineland (cumberland county) however i got sniffles from a place in cape may (cape may county). So sad

your ferret should be vacinated every year, so it all depends on when they said they did it. Call your vet and ask.

I saw that on Yahoo. He sure is one ugly women LOL....
On a side note I know plenty of unvaccinated ferrets, even a rescue and she doesn't vaccinate her own ferrets or the ones she adopts out.. I know a lot of people don't agree with that, but.. The only thing to be concerned about is distemper. They can't even get rabies unless they are bitten by a rabid animal. I PERSONALLY do not like vaccinating but do what is required by law. Personal experience shows that some vaccines don't even work. My two dogs that most recently had the kennel cough vaccine got kennel cough and my two that haven't had it for about three years did not so I will not be getting it for any of them in the future.

I know it's a tangent, but I'm with you Ketlin. I only do what's legally neccessary- but I practice what I preach, because I only have what shots are legally necessary too... and not one more than I need. Both sides of the vaccine arguments often scare me- especially with ferrets- because I don't want to see my animals get sick, but it works both ways- with poor testing, they can get sick from the vaccine, or they can get sick from not getting it. I feel like either way, I lose. However, Tiffany, I would think you have something to go on there. Why should that guy/gal have lied about the vaccinations? S/he could have just come out and said that s/he didn't vaccinate. Wouldn't have killed him/her. People adopt them anyway. I don't think our Animal Rescue League around here vaccinates their ferrets- which is why I think they only charge $25 for them. No harm no foul, as long as they don't advertise these things, and they warn the owners to isolate the new ferret temporarily. Good luck Tiffany!

I think I only ever got my baby & school shots, and I've only had the flu a few times when I was much younger and I rarely get a cold (Maybe once a year).. I also don't have any allergies. I'm a very outdoorsy person.. And I do believe that vaccines have the ability to last a life time in people and animals, but once again I do what is required by law.

well you guys are right on about the distemper shot its a must as it is deadly to your ferret. Here in San Antonio, your ferrets must have a rabies shot and be liscensed...not that everyone does that. I know SAFE's ferrets all recieve thier rabies once adopted all other have distemper reguarly, until adopted.

While I know I will be judged on this issue.... I have researched and seen effects from vaccinations. I chose not to. Not for money problems and not out of stupidity. most of my babies had never gotten vaccines before I rescued them. As soon as I got Mickey and Rascal, I took them in for distemper (I don't do rabies). We almost lost Rascal. 15 minutes later he collapses and started seizing. I spent more money on saving him from that shot then the shot itself and I NEVER want to see my baby collapse like that in front of me. It was torturous for me AND for Mickey who looked at him and whimpered. It was so bad. Given that I know virutally no history for any of my ferrets, I do my best to keep them from situations of distemper. I do NOT let animals in my house other than my furbabies. I am highly allergic to cats anyways so I stay away from them. I am very cautious at the vet office. I just really feel like it's better FOR my babies to not get vaccinated. Rabies doesn't matter. Distemper... like tiedeyed, I feel it's a lose-lose situation. But I'd feel better if I knew their lives were in my hands...as opposed to the fate of a vaccine. I just do the best I can given the fact that they're not vaccinated and so far, it's paid off.
Will I regret this one day? maybe. But since this is not a spur-of-the-moment, idiotic decision on my part, after seeing what one of my babies went through, I feel like it's a good decision. I know plenty of people who feel the way I do. If your ferret is known to not react, I would DEFINITELY vaccinate. But mine don't have histories that I can follow...so this is it.

I think a lot of people are on both sides of the issue here, and you won't be judged. To me, what's important is that you are doing what you feel is right. Your ferrets aren't neglected, as they have veterinary care and are not degrading based on lack of care... So that's what matters. At least to me, that is... I think that indoor ferrets contracting distemper is rare, as well as the extremely negative reactions to the vaccines are rare (except in your case, of course)... So either way, there is no winning. We don't even know how long the vaccines are good for, and that would be the day I would get vaccinated regularly for something so medically sketchy... Which I have passed on to my values with my pets. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm a bad person. As you said, will we regret it someday? It's possible. But you would have regretted getting your baby the shot if he didn't make it anyway. It's tragic animal health studies have so many holes as they do, as they get be physically and emotionally scarring to both the animals and the people who get wrapped in the mistakes.

I no longer vaccinate my ferrets because of nearly losing 2 of them to the distemper vaccine. I do not even vaccinate against rabies but my ferrets never leave my house and I do not allow people to hold my ferrets unless I know them 100% (family, etc). My ferrets only leave my residence when going to the vets for check ups and any sort of treatment and even then I take precautions.

Since the dog is the only other animal that goes near them (and she is on heartworm, rabies shot, and front line) i think she is good.

We get Jaret Rabies and Distemper. The neighbors have 3dogs and a cat. So the thought that he could get Distemper is always there. He handels his shots pretty well. He just comes home and falls asleep for most of the day.(not like he sleeps alot anyways)

That's good to know. I mean, I don't want to promote no-vaccinations, because then people might be like "wellllll.....I guess I don't have to pay all that money for them since SHE says its ok not to". I mean, the evidence for distemper vaccine is clear...if there are no reactions to it, it will prevent an otherwise unpreventable and 100% fatal disease. It's tough on me to make that decision but as years have gone, and they remain OK, I get a little more optimistic that I did the right thing. That reaction he had was so bad and scary, I never want to see them have that again, but then again, I think I'd rather see him have a terrible reaction than that and (probably) live through it than die from distemper. Decisions, decisions.

If only there were no reactions to the distemper vaccine... Sigh. There is no right answer.
