I got an e-mail the other day from Claudia that I would like to share with all of you:
Hi and Happy 2009 everyone!
This is a special year for me since it's been 10 years this month that I have been running the Oxford Ferret Rescue.
I don't know where the time has gone!
I've learned so much over the years and I'm sure I'll be learning more.
I'd like to do a brief rundown of the past year.
I don't know where we would be without the fundraisers and the volunteers that coordinate them!!!!!!!
Our 6th Annual Fundraiser that was held in April made just over $7000.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The best yet!
Joe Corbi Pizza sales made over $1000.00.
Bowling made over $700.00.
Fall Online Raffles made over $700.00.
Walk for the Animals made over $1200.00.
Cameras and Ink jet printers made over $150.00.
Cash Donations were over $6000.00.
Adoptions were way down this past year, but we had a lot go into great foster homes.
Adoptions: about $1900.00.
And then there are the expenses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here are most, but not all:
ADV testing and shipping was over $1500.00.
Feeding the fuzzies was over $3500.00.
Pharmacy bill (Pet Health) over $2200.00.
Melatonin Implants over $1000.00.
Pellets over $2000.00.
Chadwell Animal Hospital over $17,000.00 Good thing some things are discounted!!!!
In 2007 I was the second top spending client!
Before I had ferrets, I rescued sheep and goats and several years ago had a total of 24!
I'm now down to 13 and some of their expenses are:
Hay: about $500.00 and about $500.00 for feed.
Sheep shearing is about $120.00.
I am Oxford Ferret Rescue/Cecil County Animal Rescue so I can't forget to mention my other special kids.
There are a number of people that donate regularly: Moshka, Scott, Tom and Carolyn Miller, Norman Nelson, Angela and Mike,
Kruba and Ross, Jeremy, Michael and Suzanne Yopp, Lynne Toole, and Janet Haskin. I hope I haven't missed anyone.
Thank you to all the volunteers and Foster parents. I CAN'T DO THIS WITHOUT ALL OF YOU!
Thank you to the other shelter directors for their continued moral support and friendship.
We took in over 100 ferrets in 2008!!!! WOW, that makes me tired just to think about!
Most were older and need lots of TLC and various medicine.
Sampson needed surgery when he became blocked from an adrenal tumor. Dr. Gold marsupialized his bladder in 2 places.
He was able to urinate through these openings until normal function returned. He is doing great.
I encountered something terrible and apparently rare this past year.
I took in a BEAUTIFUL 6 month old silver mitt (yes, he was a keeper) from an animal shelter.
He was a panda and deaf, so I thought at first that was why he wasn't always wanting out.
I took him in because I thought maybe he had a heart problem. No - he had a mass which the biopsy revealed as ferret FIP.
This was a death sentence and I didn't want to give up.
I had to let him go and I would like to set up a fund to go towards research for this terrible disease.
I took in 3 ferrets that a breeder no longer wanted. It's amazing what stress does to a body.
Meeko looked adrenal, but shortly after neutering, became a beautiful sable boy with a full coat of hair.
I took in a very little girl that was in a bird cage at an auction. The people that bought her found 6 babies 3 days later (3 died).
She was a skeleton that somehow had babies. Pickles is now a fat and very happy little girl.
I need to touch on a couple IMPORTANT health issues:
We are doing alot of hairball surgeries. PLEASE give you fuzzies a hairball remedy 3-4 times weekly and daily when shedding!
Hairloss is NOT the only sign of adrenal disease in males. PLEASE always make sure your boys are peeing.
We just put down a client's ferret that had a beautiful coat. He didn't recognize that his boy was straining and couldn't pee.
His bladder was huge and his abdomen was so tense. He was almost gone by the time he got to the clinic.
If your older fuzzie is sleeping more, please have his blood glucose checked. It just may be the first sign of insulinoma, not just old age!
ADV testing is so important. I just had to put down a very special 8 year old girl that just came in.
Both the CEP test from Blue Cross and the PCR test at Georgia (tests for ADV DNA) came back positive.
She was very anemic and weak when she came in.
What's next for this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My fault this letter is late- we just made over $500.00 at our bowling fundraiser and we are doing great with the Yankee Candle sales.
The end date for the Yankee Candle Sales is March 6 so dont forget to get those orders in.
We will have a table at the York Show on March 28th at the York Fairgrounds.
You better mark Sat. April 25th for our 7th Annual Fundraiser at the Cecil County Fairgrounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The event will begin at noon, raffles will be at 1 and 2 pm and the live auction will begin about 3pm. This should be our best ever.
We have such great donations, both animal and non-animal. With all the restarant GC, you may never cook again.
We are going to have something new this year! A photo contest with no entry fee. A dollar gets you a vote for your favorite picture.
So, go for your best shots and let the best picture win! (Not open to professional portraits, please.)
We are also going to have contests throughout the day.
Thank you again, everyone. It's amazing how one little ferret in July, 1998 changed my life forever!!!
Zeke, you are the reason I'm a rescue and that don't give up when I get discouraged.
It also helps that there are ALWAYS people there when I need them.
2009 adoptions as of 3/1/09: 8
Dave Nelson
Robin Edgell and family
Debbie Temple and family
Kayci Sheehan
Surrendered Ferrets as of March 1, 2009: 11
I also currently have a couple single ferrets and 2 pairs that are available and there would be no adoption fee.
Looking forward to a great 2009!
Sincerely,
Claudia and zoo
