Just got word from a friend that someone abandoned a mother ferret with 3 babies at the Sheraton in Eatontown. Luckily they were found in time. The babies aren't weanted yet so not sure when they'll be put up for adoption. I may take a drive there tomorrow to check them out.

They open at 1pm this afternoon so I'm hoping to take a drive over there. I had a manager's meeting yesterday so my friend only left a message saying they were abandoned near the Sheraton - which is just down the road from the SPCA. He has a friend who is a vet tech there and she called him because she knew he was an animal lover who had friends who were ferret owners.
I've heard through the grapevine that the SPCA had installed cameras on the property to catch people who abandon animals so that may be why this person left them down the road. At least they left them in a well trafficed site not far from the SPCA (about 5 minutes) and with enough food. And he said they appeared to have been socialized and well taken care of.

well, that is good to hear. i am glad they left them were they did and with food. i dont know if the animal shelter by me has cameras... but there is an big caged inclosure that people can leave a dog or cat (or smaller animals in carriers) if its after hours.... and if there ARE cameras...i say just dress up like a ninja and dont park in their lot, run in, drop off, and run out.

Why is it that they are concerned with who drops the animals off? I'm not being negative, but I'm just curious (and clueless)... My local animal shelter has a hallway in which the outside door is always unlocked (and then there's another door into the actual shelter they lock up at night), and it contains a row of dog kennels and a row of cat cages for people to drop off after hours. They didn't have any cameras on it that I was aware of... I guess the idea is that the animals are better off in their enclosures overnight than abandoned along the road, due to the admittedly inconvenient hours of the rescue. I could understand cameras being mounted so that no crazy, sick person decides to "adopt" their choice of strays available in said cages past hours for free... I don't know if this practice is right or wrong, bc I've never known any different. Any word yet on the mom ferret and kids? I"m glad they made it to the shelter safely.

So sad that someone would just ditch them.. but I'm glad to hear that they were found quickly and are in good hands now. If I can help out, by fostering or something, let me know.. I'm in Maryland so I'm not really sure how much help I can be.. but the offer stands.
Let us know how it went when you drove to visit!

The vet tech who knows my friend was tied up with procedures when we went. I left my name and number for her to call me with another woman. That woman didn't know too much about the situation. Only that the ferrrets weren't ready to be weaned and are still under observation. She also said that if it was an abandonment case that they would try to investigate it place charges against the person who did it before putting them up for adoption. I'll keep everyone updated.
Oh - and I forgot to check for the cameras. But I think there's a town ordinance so they can't just leave kennels outside for anonymous drop offs. Since they charge a surrender fee per animal is my guess why the person didn't leave them there. It's a shame - I could never, ever imagine just leaving my babies anywhere.

The surrender fee bothers me sometimes. I mean yes the shelter needs the money to get the best care that they are taking over with the animals but that is why people just drop animals off on the side of street or something. I know a shelter in camden county that charges a $150 surrender fee for a dog. I only know that because when i went to the shelter to look for a dog i saw the sign. Is this just a jersey thing??

I hope the mom and baby ferrets are doing okay and find a good home. The fee for dropping off an animal in San Antonio is $15.00 for a baby and I think it's higher for an adult. I'll have to look next time I am there for the amount. I go every few months to make a donation, say hi to the dogs and sign petitions etc. I don't think Pleasanton has a droff off fee but our city is small. I don't think they keep the animals long before they are put down. One of my good friends runs the Brush Country Animal Rescue here in Pleasanton. She use to not have a drop off fee but now charges $20 and up per animal because she is so full and the animals are not being adopted very quickly. I think she has around 37 that are not adoptable for various reasons as well.

See, here's the thing about my shelter's surrender fee... It is only charged if it is your animal... So if you go in with your "unwanted" dog, you can just say you found him outside, or someone abandoned him in your new home or something like that... and the shelter doesn't charge. They know that people are ripping them off (I've heard them talk about it, that's how I found out about the surrender fee procedure), but there isn't a way to prove it. They also require permission from your landlord to adopt on the spot, but I'm pretty positive that people in apartments have lied, saying they own their home, and no one looked into it... Rescues are complicated... lol
That explains a lot. I never thought the city would have had an ordinance, which I should have, being that I work for a municipality. lol

I mean, it's not an excuse, but there are a lot of people ditching their dogs because when their money gets low, rather than quit smoking or going out to eat on Saturdays, they dump off the dog... but there are also people who couldn't afford the dog to begin with, and with tighting in the economy, simply cannot afford the dog.... if they cannot afford his rabies shot or dog food, how would they pay his $150 surrender fee? Is there maybe a way around it, I wonder.

and yet there are now states that have "safe haven" laws for HUMAN babies.... and its free of charge no names no questions. just drop off your baby at a designated safe place and your free and clear. HOWEVER, if you want to get rid of your dog or cat (or Ferret) you shall pay $$$ thank you very much! dont forget, we are watching you via the camera right over there in the corner... oh and please leave any food and toys. <wink>
dont get me wrong, i think its great when people bring in their animal because they know its the right thing to do, AND if they can, by all means donate some money. but the knowledge that they have to pay to surrender makes more and more people dump animals in ditches rather than at a shelter for that very reason.

FINALLY spoke with the SPCA vet tech - there are NO babies! My friend got his info from the person at the Sheraton that found them - I was under the assumption that he had spoken to the tech but she said she hasn't spoken to him in weeks. And evidentally the lady from the Sheraton knows nothing about ferrets - just assumed the little ones were babies.
So - sorry for misleading anyone.
Here's the scoop - there were FIVE ferrets abandoned altogether. She said they were all very sweet but definitely adults - not sure of their approximate age yet. There are 2 females unfortunately both are adrenal and 3 healthy boys. They need to adopt them out ASAP as they are in a 1 level guinea pig cage! I cannot get there until Thursday at which time I'll take photos of them and the tech said she'll have more info on them. I'm not sure what they're going to do with the adrenal girls.
I'm trying to talk myself out of ferret math....... 4 was suppose to be my limit but I couldn't let my former co-worker get his hands on Mocha knowing that he may have been the one to injure him. sigh.....

Heartbreaking..... The two little girls who are adrenal are absolutely the sweetest things - the one who has the worse case just wanted to be out of that cage and cuddled. The two boys that came in with them seem very healthy. All 4 seem to have decent teeth but their coats are a little rough. The tech couldn't find the paperwork on them - she thinks they may be pursuing an abandonment charge. There is a 5th ferret that was not abandoned - he was a stray picked up in Long Branch. He's a brown sable and perhaps around 18mos-2 years old. He too seemed very friendly. ALL of them have the Marshall's tatooes. I will post pictures we took. The SPCA is also in contact with Metro Ferret. There will be no required adoption fee to experienced ferret owners although Stacy said they would like a donation.
