FYI...SO many of these listed are scams, or folks just want $$$ for the ferrets & cages & such...
When we 1st started out, we would scan Craig's List. After being around the block a few times-I have seen how Craig's List can EASILY DESTROY and bankrupt a shelter within weeks. The more that people respond to these listings, a demand is created- and the cycle continues.
Who ends up paying for the sick fuzzies? The shelters, and the person who takes them from Craig's List. The shelters in turn, now have no recourse but to lay out finances.
Who ends up getting rewarded with $$$ for NOT living up to the committment to care for this dear animal? The Craig's List poster who is giving up these dear animals.
If there are no repsonses, most people WILL FIND the proper resources-they will go to ferret websites to locate shelters and surrender. In turn, the shelters can get donations for the surrenders-whether it be monetary, a cage or some kind of supplies.
Sadly enough, it is irresponsible people who are getting paid off EVERY time a nice person absolves them of their responsibility and committment EACH time a Craig's List ferret listing is answered. Sadly, it is the good guys who lose out.
Case in point, the guy who 1st wanted $200, now he sees that he can now get $300 and is gunning for that. If he gets no responses, he will go through the proper avenues.
Just a point I wanted to make as I a shelter director.

I scan them because I'll rescue a free ferret, and if I can't keep him, I'll get him to someone who can care for him. I refuse to pay anything for them... With the exception of the time I paid $25 for one that was going to be a cagemate for my cousin's kit. I always tell them basically, that I thought they were adopting their ferrets out and that I can pay $300 for three brand new kits at the pet store if I want to.

I agree with you Rose. Most times it is oppourtunistic parasitic a holes that want a quick buck. I did get the girls off cl though. They came with ferret nation cage, litter boxes, 3 books, assorted odds and ends, for $60. This lady screened people and we had to meet her and the fuzzies before she would agree to let us have them. There are a few good people that really care for their ferrets and unfortunatly, not enough knowledge to go around. I've learned a lot from here and am truly grateful for it, but I think I am in the minority as far as researching before deciding.

I have realized, I cannot save every single one (wish I could though)...I must concentrate on the ones here, in order to give them the life that they deserve. That was one of the very rare & decent CL transactions ...You see, $60 is very reasonable to ask considering you are taking the cage & accoutrements. And also, to make sure you're not someone who is just using them for snake food. I am glad they found you & you found them ! : )

I am so honored that they chose us as well. When I read here about all the horrible things that happen to them... One day, when my husband is gone(love you honey!), I would like to try to open my own shelter. I see way too many ferrets in local shelters. I also had a half brained idea about opening a small store or booth for ferret education. Hopefully I will be able to do more than dream about it. Someday.

I also had a half brained idea about opening a small store or booth for ferret education. Hopefully I will be able to do more than dream about it. Someday. You CAN. You can DO anything you set your mind to. My ex wasn't a ferret guy, but eventually he left. (No tears shed there), and after I got on my feet financially (he NAILED me in the divorce, which cost me my business). Eventually, I started contracting my work, and started doing small scale stuff with my little son-who has been around ferrets since he's 2 yrs old. (He's my REAL partner in this) In 2005, I re-married a wonderful man from Scotland who admitted he was afraid of ferrets, but opened his heart up despite it. It did not take long before they stole his heart. After Angie died in 2007, I asked him how he felt about a sanctuary for the forgotten ones who had no chance of adoption...and in his typical fashion-he said, "Aye-whatever you want-I am behind you 100%"...and I have to say, he has been so supportive. Never complains about the lack of space, the messes, or the bills. He's not much on cleaning poo, but he is becoming a great assistant. All you have to do is want it bad enough-make sure funds are there (I work 7 days a week to keep us in the black) and start off small. You CAN do it ! : )

Lol, I bet the Scottish accent doesn't hurt either Hehe, I couldn't help it! I'm a complete sucker for accents. In the beginning, we only spoke via e-mail, as we met on a site, and then became moderators on another site. When we had our 1st conversation on the phone-I had NO idea what he was even saying ! So, I just said, "uh-huh" to everything ! Years later, of trans-Atlantic dating, and almst 4 years of being married-I don't even hear it anymore ! LOL He has become a ferret-head. Nothing pleases him more than kisses from a ferret...

Working with Father Nature's... I know first hand how detrimental Craig's List REALLY is to Rescues. Most, if not ALL Rescues tend to stay away from CL. Surrenders comming from the "normal" channels (websites, ads & "word of mouth") FILL the Rescues. They don't need to "look" for ferrets. Sad but true, Rescues must use a realistic moto... "We CAN'T save them all." As much as we'd like to, it just isn't possible. If a Rescue DOES go to CL... They know where it is... No help needed.
So if staying away from CL is a necessity... Then so is staying away from "countless" posts ABOUT CL listings. If people are interested in "rescuing" ferrets from there, then they will go there to look. But if you're not GOING to rescue them yourself, then you shouldn't post every listing that you see. The shelters stay away from CL... They don't need it constantly "shown" to them. Sorry... But that is how it is... Or at least the way I see it!!!

Sorry guys, I didn't even think of what it must do to the rest of you also. I guess my new found fuzzyitis got the best of me.
Rose, my husband too wasn't fond of them in the beginning. He's a good man, just not an animal person. Too bad for him! It took about a year of pesting from my son to even think about it. When I got the call, I didn't ask, I told him I was getting them. They smelled so bad the first 3 weeks that I was afraid that they would cause a major fight. Now he askes if the 'girls' were out yet when he gets home from work. He goes into their room and actually plays with them. I think in time, he may come around.
Matt, you're right, you can't save them all. The mom/worrywort/girlscout in me wants to try. It's kind of like kids, no one can take care of them better than you can. I know how unrealistic a view this is but I can't help it.
Again, my apologies for my thoughtlessness in throwing this in your faces. You guys are in the trenches a lot longer than I am and I truly didn't mean to cause any angst. Sincerely, Georgana

Momto2, i dont think they are meaning anything towards you. as Rose said, you got lucky with the ad you answered and you have your two fantastic girls now!! please dont be sorry bout that.
i think what is being said is, CL is full of crappy scams... and there are a lot of people, including shelters, that stay clear away from CL due to the high volume of trashy people that will do anything for a buck... a person could easily be sucked into a depression if they believed all the stuff they read on CL. Sooooo, you have a bunch of people that have purposely stayed away from CL only to see the links of those ads posted here... and then see your fellow posters scramble trying to figure out how to "save" a ferret that probably doesnt exist... or is just being used to make money. kinda makes a person want to say "hey! snap out of it, you are being duuuuuuped!" but how do you say that without sounding.... mean?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, for me some times it takes a brick. Thanks guys, really, I don't mind being told the truth even if it hurts. On a lighter note, keep your fingers crossed, I found a Ferret nation on CL for FN. The guy said he'd hold it for me til Monday because I work this weekend.

Momto2...That was SO not meant for you. Nor should you feel bad about it.
Like Fizz says-it's just a problem between CL & shelters. In the end, the people who post them, aren't the ones who "save" them. The buck usually gets passsed (if the ferret EVEN exists) and falls on a someone else-which I can say from experience, is inundated with fuzzies & bills. My thinking is, the person who is posting about CL ferrets on a site should be able to have the capablity and finances to "save" them-many of them are asking others to save them. You saved your two girls on your own, and I find that to be beautuiful, yet rare.
Please don't feel that was in ANY way directed toward you. In my eyes, you did a fine job by those little ladies.
: )

I'm the OP, and I apologize if it has bothered anyone that I posted this. I wasn't posting it for ferret rescues to foot the bill. I just know that this site tends to have ferret "fanatics" like myself who are interested in ferret math (or people who might know someone looking for a friend), and I occassionally pick up the "freebies" off Craigslist to help them out, rather than have them become snake food. I do support them, and have 100% either kept them or given them to friends who I was confident could take care of them. I do do this at my own expense, for transport and care. (I've only picked up five animals [and orchestrated a few others] at this point I think, between the scams, the deadbeats and timing being problems) I just wanted to explain that. I'm infinitely sorry that this has caused pain. I don't think I've ever seen members from shelters post in the classifieds before, so I figured they didn't even check them out. I really never thought it was a problem. I didn't mean to bring up negative emotions for you all. I saw the original post (for the free ferrets) and knew they were five-ten minutes from my house, so I posted so I could pick them up and house them temporarily if anyone was interested. I'm always available to help out if there's something I can do up in this area if anyone (rescue or not) needs the help... whether it be on Craigslist, the newpaper or nailed to a telephone pole. I guess I was just thinking of myself, and of those ferrets (real or not), and never considered anyone else's feelings. I'm sorry if I've hurt anyone's feelings... Thanks for bringing this to my (and everyone else's) attention.

I have only ever paid for 3 of the 8 ferrets that I have ever owned. My very first one was bought from a privately owned pet store (my bad, I was uneducated at the time). My 2nd ferret was from my friend. I gave her like $30 for him because she was moving to Hawaii (Military orders) and ferrets aren't allowed there. My other ferret I got from a friend also who needed to find her a new home do to some personal issues so I gave her I believe $50. The rest of my ferrets came from craigslist ads. I simply told the people that I could supply a GREAT home for them and that I would not pay a dime for the ferrets. Simply because I would need to do vet check ups and such. I still keep in touch with one of the ladies that was in a situation where she just could not keep her 3 ferrets any longer but wanted them to go to a great home together. When I lived in Vegas she would baby sit all my ferrets for me occasionally and now that I live in VA I still update her with pics The other ferrets came from people who just mistreated them. They lived in filthy disgusting cages, fed crappy food, and were never ever given floor time. I am at my limit right now (7) so I cannot take in anymore even though I see ads on CL right now with ferrets in my area that are in need of homes.

I did that when I was rescuing two rats from CL. There was a girl who was DESPERATE to get rid of them. I could tell she had no idea what to do to find a suitable home. She wanted actually a low rehoming, I contacted her anyway, explained I could help (I had a friend that was going to take them in) and said that I'd take them for free. She gave them to me. Well, one died the day she was going to give him to me, but I got his cagemate. My friend cared for him until she no longer could, and at that time I took him back, and found another rat fanatic that would take great care of him. He's still doing great. I always love a happy ending.
