What a handsome guy! *Got the memory foam! It's only 1" thick though. I figured that would be thick enough for a ferret. Plus, that stuff is expensive! LOL But when I get it in, I'll let you know so you can keep an eye out for it in the mail.*

Hey Guys, Kristi and I just got back from Vacation (in Maine). We stopped in at Father Nature's to deliver lobsters and see Little Dude. So... Crystal... Ask and you shall receive!!! LD Pics!!! Here is (not so) Little Dude. Looking up at Aunt Kristi He loves being held. He actually squeeks to be picked up!!! Which is odd being that he is deaf. And how is THIS for feisty??? That is Mother Nature's (Evelyn) "helpless" foot. As I noted, LD is NOT SO little anymore. Kits don't stay kits for very long, as we all know. But he is STILL cute as a button!!! Later, Matt & Kristi (Iz, Brut, & Sinbad) He is so handsome - what part of Maine were you in? Someone walked into my mother's store today with a ferret on a leash that did rescue in MA and she was OMG my daughter has those. She said she (ferret) was really well behaved, better than some of the children that come into the store. Score one for the ferrets!

Fantastic news...Little Dudes blood work and urinalysis came back perfect. The news is a double edged sword though. Even though we are relieved that there is no bad news, we were hoping for perhaps a deficiency problem that could be corrected. Now we need to go foward with addressing the trauma as the main culprit. This puts us in a similar situation as Princess with finding a Vet that is skilled in ferret back injuries. We need a Board Certified Neurologist that deals with fuzzies because no other Vets want to read the MRI and make a diagnosis.

While I don't think they would tackle him, they should be able to refer you to someone.

well, its great news to hear that hes clean. but yes, it would of been a bit..easier if it had been a deficiency rather than trauma. Hopefully you'll be able to find or get pointed in the right direction of a good vet that can help him out.

What about Dr. Doolen at Oakhurst Vet Hosp? After seeing the behind the scenes at Oakhurst and their general ideas about exotic care, I would never bring any of my animals there. I'm not going into specifics on the forum, but if you would like to know my experiences there, feel free to PM me.

Father Nature, I have a few suggestions. If anyone lives near a Jo-ann Super store, I'm pretty sure they have memory foam in the back with the other foam. A regular store may have it, but I definitely saw some in my local super store. That way, you could use the 40% coupon. Actually, I think this week they have a few 50% coupons. Also, I bought a kind sized memory foam pad for about $40 at Boscov's. It was on sale and I had a coupon for an extra 20%, so maybe someone can check that out. And guys, don't forget, they are going to need detergent to help clean up... Just a thought. F.N., I was the one who wrote to you about my girl who was paralyzed. Aside from the spray bandage, I used puppy pads to help wick moisture away from her. I cut them up and used them like a bed lining at night. I also used them instead of her litter box, because she was having a hard time climbing in and out. The cheapest place to get them (even with shipping) is on Petedge.com (the store brand). They worked really well. I also made her a cart to hang from. She was pretty weak in the end, so mostly I moved the cart so she didn't have to drag it, but it kept her legs off the ground. Actually, it helped her use her legs more. She didn't have to support her weight, she just had to move her legs. It needs a bit of tweaking for a young ferret, but if you're interested, I can tell you how I made it and send some pics. The other thing I did was to make her a little sack for her hind legs so they weren't dragging on the ground. It's easiest just to attach it to a harness. One last thing, how far are you willing to travel to find a vet? I heard of one up in Mass (western) who was supposed to be great. You could try e-mailing Dr. Bruce Williams in DC. He would probably know someone, maybe even in our area. Good luck with the little guy!

detergent would cost too much for any of us to ship. I think I remember Father Nature telling me that he mad wheels for parylized ferrets. But i think he is holding off to see what is wrong with little dudes back. Also, Welcome to TLH

if it came to sending detergent for washing I would send money orders to go towards it. I got my hands on some clips so I should be able to start working on bedding again soon (as soon as I finish Deathly Hallows.. cant..put down book x_o lol)

Little Dude had a great day with mommas PJ and Dakota. He played so hard that he is SOUND asleep which is rare for him. We have been overloaded with sick fuzzies in the past 24 hours. 1 definite adreanal, 1 starved so bad you can count her bones and another found on the streets of Newark half starved. The food processor is going non stop turning out yummy batches of Father Natures Duck Soup. Of course Little Dude can tell when the LaMachine comes out it's time for a snack. The one little girl surrendered, that is skin and bones, actually got her appetite back and had some kibble tonight. She has had a very lopsided gate to her walk and my suspicions were confirmed with a quick mite smear. Her ears were so very very bad that on 1 ear smear check we stopped counting mites at 75. We spent the best part of the morning trying to clean her ears and I looked like an engine blew up in my face' I was so covered in black thick wax from her shaking her head. I imagine the world is alot louder for Skittles right now and she is looking promising. Will keep the posts coming and thank you to everyone who has sent items for the LD.

Have tried Red Bank and they are not comfortable with back injury diagnosis. Have you tried the Oradell Animal Hospital? I know in years past that is where my vets always sent me to see a specialist for any of my pets, not sure if they will treat/diagnose exotics, tho.

Oradell will do the MRI and CAT scan for about $3500.00 but would not want to diagnose. They are one of the Hospitals which wanted us to find a board certified ferret neurologist whichy is impossible to find so far. As for our permanent residences we have Minki, a little old lady that is recovering from adreanal surgery and has insulinoma. Of coarse there is Princess and LD with the back injuries. We have Blondie Boy who threatens to leave us every couple of weeks but fights back with our help. He was bi-lateral adreanal, a mastic tumor removed from his right ear, a cordoma removed from his tail, insulinoma and finally cataracts. He is the love of our lives. His will to survive and the shear pleasure he gets from going through his tube once or twice gives us encouragement to go on with what we do. Someone once told me that as a rescue there will be certain fuzzies that become your teachers and by God he is one for sure. We also have Nena, a little older gal that we are working to raise funds for her adreanal surgery. She was surrendered by someone who tried to help her with very limited ferret knowledge and may have done more harm then good. She came in with scarred feet from burns and a swollen vulva with hair loss. She was eating Meow mix and could barely walk. That was 2 weeks ago and now she eats on her own and with Duck Soup 4 times a day plus kibble she has gained 8 oz. and was playing with LD last night. Again we would like to that everyones generosity here at TLH . With everyone coming together and helping it gives us a boost to the heart when things get overwhelming. Keith and Evelyn

I know shipping detergent is too much money. I meant it more as in, if you live in the area you could drop some off, and if you don't live in the area, you could always send along a coupon for whatever they use. It just seems there are plenty of people who can make or donate a blanket and I wanted to point out that washing said blankets every day will take a toll on the detergent budget, let alone the water bill, and maybe there are those out there that can help on that end.

There are indeed plenty of places to get a cart for a disabled pet, but they run in the $300+ range. I know, I priced them for my ferret. I made mine for about $10, probably less, so it's another option for them to play with.

I didn't think Red Bank would do backs. Why not contact Dr. Bruce Williams, and see if he could point you in the right direction?

I got the memory foam today! It's rather weird feeling. LOL Father Nature, I will cut it up tomorrow because I think I am going to have to dig out the electric carving knife to cut it (I hope that does the trick) this stuff is SO dense. If some of you that are really crafty at sewing, I plan on cutting 4 pieces to send to FN for LD and Princess and others that may need it, the sizes will be 12"x12" and 1" thick. They could use covers for them. I wouldn't want a fuzzy to be able to get to the foam.....if ya know what I mean. Unless of course FN has something already to cover them. So, anyways, FN, keep an eye out on the mail!
