July 27th. Today was a day of firsts for LD. He got a chance to go out into the big wide world and have his tiny feet touch the grass. He did not know what to make of it in the beginning but soon did his best to scurry through the yard. Mother Nature and I spent the morning at Ikea buying area rugs to cover our wood flooring. We just spent a small fortune on the floor but LD uses his hind legs less because he knows he can slide them behind on the polished wood. With the rugs it forces him to try to walk with them instead of dragging his little but. There is no change in the potty situation but we are used to poop around here and it is just par for the course. I have been trying to speak with him with my lips touching the top of his head and I am sure he can feel the vibrations of my voice. In a way it seems to comfort him and he will settle down in my arms. He is a great little fuzzy and it seems we humans are suffering most from his disabilities not the Little Dude. We are still going forward with trying to find relief if not a solution to his damaged spine and will try to update time permitting. We have 6 fuzzies on 3 hour hand feeding and of course LD still steals a little taste from all the bowls. One other thing, he is giving encouragement to Skittles, the abused little girl that is so thin. He wanted to play with her but when he saw her eating he sat and waited till she had her fill before trying to get her to play. He is becoming a fantastic ambassador for our rescue.

Not so, CFL...
I just got back from Father Nature's. Had a GREAT visit with Little Dude. He is getting around pretty darn good for his condition. You should see how fast he goes thru the tube... he'll keep up with the best of them. Yes, he still has his issues but they are NOT keeping HIM down!!! I got a bunch of pics of him, a few pretty good ones, that I will post tomorrow (Sat.) morning. Man is LD feisty!!! Great (not so little) ferret!!!

I bet he had so much fun in the grass. its good to hear he got out and into the fresh air and sunshine. its also great that hes getting so much time around other ferrets, even if its not super hard play time, hes still getting ferret to ferret contact and "helping" out the others that are sick or are trying to regain their strength.
cant wait to see pictures!

OK guys... Sorry for the delay (cable was out), So here are 4 shots of Little Dude from last nights visit / photo session. Like any other 3 1/2 mo. old ferret, he is SO feisty. Many picks - a few good. "Little Dude" "So... You Wanna Play???" "You Got Me!!!" This is the only good one of many shots of him in the tube... He's WAY too fast going thru it!!! "You Want In HERE??? I Don't Think So!!!" That is Monty (outside the box), He is one of LD's many playmates at FN's. They look like brothers. Enjoy Folks!!! Matt K.

OMG! He's so cute! I'm glad he's active - just wish he had the use of all of his legs. I think the tube photo needs to be entered in the contest.

Well, its good to know one will be easy enough to find if LD ever needs one. Though im trying to keep my fingers crossed, and ask whatever higher being is in charge of animals that maybe LD will get lucky and find the vet who can help him and maybe someday he'll be able to use his hind legs, maybe not perfectly, but be able to still use them a bit.. Its always so good to hear that hes getting around and even playing and not bed ridden like so many others ive heard of.

Today was a day for celebration, LD USED THE LITTER BOX!!!! It was just one time, out of many but, we are hopefull this may be the start of wonderful things. I have been working with him to start using his back legs more by holding him under his front legs and making him push off with the back ones. I try to limit it to 2 minutes at a time as to not over work him. He loves to try and climb up onto the couch to get at us and we use that as a work out too. He is determined to not let his handicap keep him down. and as usual we worry more about it then he. Just a little off topic now and not to offend anyone. We realy need some prayers for Skittles. I am watching her as I type and can't help but cry for her. Nothing this beautiful and sweet should have ever had to endure what she has gone through. She has only gained an ounce even with the multiple feedings we are giving her. She is so weak and stumbles when she walks but has the heart of a lion. Please ask your Higher Power to help us help her to be whole again. Keith

I dont know if you'll use it, but when I had to bulk up ferrets from either being ill or whatever other reason, I made this concauction I call "Ferret Shake".. maybe it'll help Skittles...
take a small tupperware and mix the following together- -a teaspoon or 2 of baby food -a few squirts of ferretone and ferrevite -enough ensure to just cover the baby food -a splash of soy milk
Take and mix it up really good, cover the tupperware and shake it up till everything is mixed and nuke it for like 6 seconds just to warm it up a bit. I used vanilla ensure to make it taste good. Podo loved it and it kept her going till the end. Maybe it'll help skittles. its easy to eat and put through a syringe and has everything a ferret needs to keep moving.
PS- give LD a big kiss for me for doing a good job using the potty! and hopefully your little ferre-robics help him start using his legs a bit more

LD is definitely turning into a full fledged fuzzy. He went into the kitchen today on one of his many search and destroy missions and figured out how to pull off the wood that we have blocking under the kitchen cabinets. Now picture this, two adults sitting on the floor calling for him for 10 minutes before remembering he can't hear us?? Well , he came out in his own time and we were relieved that I had taken the counters apart when we started this endeaver to make sure there was no holes or dangers. We have over 24 fuzzies here and not one of them cared about trying to get under there but LD. Once out, he did a victory lap around the play room and took a dump in front of the coffee table to remind us how cute he is. He is sleeping like an angel now and we do believe that the rugs we put down are making him use his legs more and more. He still loves to hit the hard wood floors for an ocassional body surf. LD says nite nite and will keep all his fans posted. Keith

Yup... Ditto on the talking to him thing!!! During his last "photo shoot" I was CONSTANTLY "talking" (noises and such) to him to try to get his attention. I'm suprised I got as many good pics as I did. He IS such a great little ferret.

I'm so happy to hear he used the litter box! It sounds like he is making so much progress. He was truly blessed to be brought to you. And I will say a prayer for Skittles. I hate to know an innocent animal is suffering

Little Dude had a great day romping and playing with his new buddy Peek-a-Boo. We were thrilled that he found a fuzzie gentle enough to have fun with. Peek-a-Boo is the little 9 month old Marshalls fuzzy that had Adreanal surgery on the 25th of July and was recovering beautifully. As fate would have it Peek-a Boo decided to try and climb inside her cage last night and caught her toe in between the door and cage wall. She never made a sound but must have squirmed for some time before we found her. After a frantic run to our vet we learned she broke the middle toe on her right front paw and the vet and I put her in a full leg cast to help it mend. It was a great learning experience for me but at the cost of pain to my baby. Seems like some times we can't catch a break and the reimbursement for part of Peek-a-Boos' surgery that Marshalls is sending will now go to setting her broken toe. I guess it's one of the pitfalls of having a rescue and I would not trade it for the world. All it takes is a loving look from any one of our fuzzies here and all is right with the world.

LD has developed a foot fettish. He loves to drag his hind end over the tops of feet especially bare ones. Last night while sitting on the couch watching his usual antics he decided to make a foot run. This time as he passed over my toes he decided to leave a little present along the way. He let loose with a nice watery pooh and went along his merry way with just enough pause to look back with, what I swear was a little grin. As Mother Nature scurried for the paper towels I thought she was going to leave a little present too from laughing so hard. The laugh was onher though cause as I cleaned myself off she had to take the throw rug outside for a rinse and an ample amount of LD's gift wound up on her bare feet. He who luaghs last, luaghs best... Keith
